$240,000 Collected Runner Lowers 20-Year Track Record In Turf Paradise Maiden Win

Phoenix, Arizona—The first career victory by Reno, a six-figure yearling from the inaugural foal crop of Rancho San Miguel stallion Collected, turned into a history-making outing at Turf Paradise on April 8, as the Brereton Jones-bred gelding shattered the track’s longstanding record for races conducted at 4 1/2 furlongs.

In a scorching display of speed that prompted race announcer Vic Stauffer to exclaim “Look at Reno fly!,” the heavily backed 1-5 favorite carried jockey Alex Cruz through eye-opening fractions of :21.64 for the opening quarter-mile and :43.62 for the half, ultimately reaching the wire of the maiden event a dominating five lengths ahead of his closest rival while stopping the clock in :49.64 — marking the fastest time any horse has run the distance at the Arizona track since Iron Halo (Arg) set the previous dirt record of :50 in 2006.

The current North American record for 4 1/2 furlongs is :49.
